Summer is a’ coming, and it’s high time to say goodbye to winter apathy and get those lactic-acid juices flowing. Or reading juices, anyway – it’s a jam-packed edition this May.That’s not to say, however, that winter is a time for hibernation. Every March, Switzerland goes slightly bonkers with its Engadin Ski Marathon. Forget cross-country skiing’s sedate image, as a trepidatious Minnie Burlton found out when she joined the 12,000-person scrum in this high-endurance, 26-mile snowy rite-of-passage, from page 122.As if one marathon isn’t enough, former lifestyle + travel Deputy Editor Jane Teeling thought she would run her first marathon in Amsterdam of all places. Find out what a runner’s high feels like from page 132. Our spice-factor comes in a liquid form: the peat-bog-scented whiskies of the Inner Hebrides, Scotland – especially Laphroaig – are celebrated by Contributing Editor Justin Eeles, who travels to the Isle of Islay for a tipple or ten from page 94.If this all seems a bit on the chillsome side, we make a bee-line back to Asia for a bit more sport with a small ‘s’: namely a drive from Bangkok to Singapore and back at speeds that could make a grown man cry (from page 106), and, along with 20,000 camels and 200,000 humans, the Pushkar Camel Fair in Rajasthan (from page 116).For a low-down of the best of Bangkok’s boutique hotels and Cambodia’s heritage properties, visit our lifestyle pages from page 74. We also take you cruising around Asia and spa-ing in the… office. On a personal note, by the time you read this, I will have left lifestyle + travel on a day-to-day basis. Taking up the role of Editor-At-Large from my new base in London, I will be contributing to the magazine in a roving capacity, handing over the full-on editing reigns to my more-than-able Deputy Editor Elise Meleisea, and my yet-to-be-announced successor. It has been emotional.
