One of my general rules of family travel is that an acceptable standard of hotel room should include a bathroom that is not worse than my own at home. So it was a good thing indeed to find that my hotel bathroom was so luxurious that I considered filing a photograph of it for future reference when I build my dream house in the south of France. Our teak pavilion at the Dhara Dhevi featured a huge bathroom with teak-panelled toilet, dressing room and a separate double shower room. The pièce de resistance was a spectacular, round, four-person Jacuzzi bath with windows overlooking rice paddies on three sides, abundant bubble bath and – get this – full-spectrum automatic underwater lighting that subtly changed the water and bubbles into a range of different colours. Bath time was so much fun for all the family – never before had our daughters had such a full-on disco bath. They were practically begging to get ready for bed each day! Bath time aside, children as well as adults can enjoy their time in this extraordinary resort. From the spotting of a tiny frog on the way to breakfast on the first day, a visit to a water buffalo, to a ride in a horse and trap back to our room – the micro thrills for the kids kept on coming. The Dhara Dhevi employs the demure fine arts graduate Ms View to keep little minds and fingers busy with a range of high-quality craft activities in the free-of-charge Lanna Kids Club. I witnessed her immense calm in the face of wild splashing of paint, but suspect that underneath her genteel exterior resides a will of iron equal to the toughest of governesses. Once the indoor activities get too sticky, children can head out to visit a craft village, move into the rice paddies to get muddy with the farmers, or even practice the art of Thai dancing. Parents can enjoy three hours of guilt-free time knowing that their precious offspring are doing something more interesting than watching TV. For pure family indulgence in an extraordinary setting, this resort was a fun treat. If you are prepared to spend upwards of USD 295+++ per villa per night you too can see how you like being treated like Lanna royalty.
