Exhibitionist bathing - Veranda’s Sky Villa spa-chic bathrooms move into the bedroom and the big blue beyond.Smart design can transform a design challenge into a design triumph. In this case August Design had to balance a beautiful beach view of the Veranda Sky Villas against less appealing side and rear views - a separate bathroom would have been dark and artificially lit, contradicting the organic minimalist design concept. The answer came in the form of a bold open-plan concept incorporating the bathroom, spa treatment area, living room and bedroom into one harmonious and contiguous whole. Influenced by Japanese and Roman bathhouse design, hardwood sliding panels can either separate living areas into discrete rooms or be thrown open to create an airy loft space. To bring the bathroom forward and make it a public space, design, décor and fittings are key - sandy neutrals and natural materials like sea-grass, marble and sandstone bring the beach inside in this bathroom design, which is kept modern with meticulously chosen fixtures which have a solid modern-sculptural quality. The curved swans-neck lines of the water spigots are balanced against the geometrical lines of the taps in the bath tub, while the double sinks have space-age cylindrical barrel tap attachments. The bathroom sanctuary employs the ‘less is more’ design maxim with a play on curves and planes, avoiding clutter and overcrowding, but not at the expense of fixtures and accessories, making all the difference in achieving a luxurious, elegant and coordinated bathroom habitat. Clean lines dominate, using large flags and small mosaic tiles create a spa aesthetic.
