Why is it that people flock to the beach for their holidays? A shared, universal definition of playful paradise? Or something deep in our primitive unconscious dating back to the days of semi-aquatic evolution? The jury’s still out on that one, but we hit the beach anyway, celebrating seascapes, seashells, and all things sandy. We forage the beaches of Pacific Asia, esp-ecially Western Australia’s Monkey Mia situated on the sandy shores of World Heritage-listed Shark Bay, which built its reputation on endless opportunities to see sharks, stingrays, dugongs and loggerhead turtles, along with the friendliest wild dolphins in the world. But Lara Dunston and Terry Carter, there to research the new Perth and Western Australia guidebook for Lonely Planet, found that at the end of the day – right around sunset – the biggest attraction for them was the tranquillity of the place. What’s a beachy break without a good feed? A peckish one, that’s what. We confront this conundrum head on, with some seriously scrummy culinary coverage around the region. Grab your two-piece or your snug-fitting Speedos, lots of sun cream, a couple of back-issues of this here publication, an intellectually stimulating novel (no airport wallpaper paperbacks, we insist), a jolly mix of family, friends and lovers, and head to the beach. Don’t be shy, beach-o-philes, roast your bodies and barbeque raw foodstuffs with lifestyle + travel.
