Bangkok revives its historic aquatic heart for an exquisite royal celebration

Bangkok’s legendary waterways are stepping back into the spotlight. In honour of His Majesty the King’s 74th Birthday Anniversary, city officials recently swept through the historic canals around Rattanakosin Island, prepping the routes for “The River of Life Under His Majesty’s Benevolence.” Running July 24–31, 2026, the week-long affair pairs sacred Thai traditions with an undeniable riverside elegance.

The main event unfolds on July 26, when 225 monks from 40 temples drift down the Prem Prachakorn, Saen Saep, and central island canals for a striking morning alms-giving ritual. Behind the scenes, the city is manicuring canal banks, reinforcing waterfront piers, and installing bespoke platforms near Mahakan Fort Park. Crews are clearing debris and monitoring water quality around the clock, ensuring the capital’s historic waterlines look impeccably tailored for the occasion.
